Actually, I'm tinkering with one now that I would like to put onboard my 6 string, and mount another in the cigar-box I'm starting on. I have the parts to put together a suitable preamp as well. I have a couple of small 386 based amps (one with diode clipping, if you really want to crank up the teen angst), and some buffers for piezo devices. I guess my main interest in this thing would be having all the parts (especially the PCB) in one package rather than trying to hunt them down or mail order them. But I would like something that could run reasonably clean. I will be playing mostly with some kind of overdrive/distortion, so it doesn't need to be pristine. What I am concerned with is having 30W of noise and junk. I could even do that on perf board if I was careful about routing the wires. The link to the guy who put up the schematic describes how you bridge the 2 through a resistor (for mono) or use a different capacitor circuit for stereo. 2 channel, apparently the kit can be configured either way. The power supply I could handle (Radio Shack, oddly does sell the transformer locally). I realize you do get what you pay for! I was just hoping to find all the parts in one package, as locally all we have is Radio Shack, and they carry virtually nothing I would need. I too am leary about imports off of ebay. Thing is it will be built with junk components and won't touch this for sound quality wise. You can probably buy a brand new SS amp for the same amount. It costs a lot more it's 160 dollars but that's about as cheap as your going to get if you want something good and it includes everything. If you push it with your little ruby it should be an awesome sounding amp.

All the capacitors resistors and transformers are top notch, it comes with a case and cases are expensive, the power supplies are included and the instructions are great.

The LM series chips are great over driven. It's an lm 1875 chip and the are awesome chips. The kit sounds great for listening to music. A bit noisy but a lot of the good sounding stuff is. I use it mostly for listening but it sounds great on guitar but I only use one channel for that too. If you still want to build something like this I built this amp. I don't think the tda is one of the good ones Thing is they sound a lot more different chip to chip so you never know. I am not sure how good that chips sounds over driven.Ĭhips are kind of like tubes they all sound different. I think lm386 amps sound great but what your going to get is the crunch lm386 tone ran into a tda2030 and your probably going to get some tda crunch to it because you will be over driving that chip. The ruby would probably do the trick for that. You need a preamp for it actually to work. It's pretty much a case of you get what you pay for. I am just Leary of buying anything from a seller all the way in china and having things shipped from china always sucks it takes long and it you have to go to the post office to pick it up. I don't mind buying chinese products at all. Aside from that when you order that kit if you want it to sound good your going to have to replace the cheap caps with good ones if you really want it to sound good. Do you know enough to find and build the right power supply with the right transformer? You probably won't be able to bridge the two channels your more likely to damage the amp that way. Maybe I can scrape up the funds for valve amp in the future.

I have a "Valvecaster" to give the guitar some tube flavor, and for now a solid state is going to have to be the answer.

Just looking for a small-ish, highly portable amp. Fortunately our electronics guru at work is also Chinese, so it's not a problem! The directions, apparently, are in Chinese. Just curious what people think of the kit. But for less than $10 for the kit, I could hardly go wrong, I think. And whatever a center tapped 24V transformer would cost.

From what I read, a good power supply is essential, and it would cost a few more bucks to upgrade the volume and swap out RCA plugs for regular jacks. It can run 2x18W (that's probably optamistic-but even 2x10W would be enough) or 1x36W. But this little kit might do the trick in the mean time. Cool growl, but not much for clean.Īny, I need more wattage, and the tuber is going to have to wait a bit. I finished my speaker cab build-and the only amp I have is a 0.5W "Ruby" amp! It's a noisy little lm386 job. I was hoping to build a small tube amp, but just got hit with a big car repair bill. I'm wondering if anyone has put together these kits from Ebay?
